Haiti's Women

International Women's Day

International women's day has a particular character this year for me because it is already more than a year since the devastating January 12 earthquake hit my dear country and that the sons and daughters of this island deploy all efforts to recover from the bloodshed and rebuild.

Haiti endures terrible suffering due to the earthquake, the cholera outbreak and the already endemic poverty before the disaster. Women and children are the most vulnerable and therefore pay the heaviest price.

In these situations of crisis and destabilization, women are the ones who continue to meet all needs.

Haitian women, the world knows that you are the pillars of our society. It is women who must find water and food, while taking care of children and the survivors, women who mobilize the community and support available resources, as they know so much.

Haitian women, the world knows your daily efforts!

Unfortunately women are the subject of violence, including sexual violence. We should say “NO” to this and demand that women are respected and able to maintain dignity.

Haitian women wear the country on their heads and its future in their bellies.

I’m convinced that, without the participation of women, no reconstruction is possible. If women are not there, failure is assured.

I am proud to be the descendant of the women of Haiti, courageous, self-willed, and stubborn. Women, like my mother and my grandmother, who have always had the strength to stave off  fate. Women who sacrificed endlessly so that their children could have lives better than theirs.

What have I learnt from them?

Each event is an opportunity to learn and  to reconnect with the essentials; to develop strength of character ad to get back to living.  "What does not kill you, makes you stronger"

Haiti, Haiti’s women, girls and boys from Haiti know that you are not alone.

Together, we mourn the dead. Together, we try to alleviate the living. Together, we will rebuild.

Life must prevail in Haiti and it is a task that would need all Haitians- to shape the future of our country.

I salute you my Haitian women, the pillars to rebuild our beautiful country,  you who are persistent in your efforts,  you who with strength, conviction, and hope, work unwaveringly despite being shaken.

I am proud of being a woman and even more to be a Haitian woman!
