The news came- "a woman was killed last night".
I wasn't shocked.
Not that I knew who was killed, but it is getting to a point where everyday I expect to hear of some fool taking the life of a woman, he cannot OWN.
Then Marijke sent me a message explaining that, "The victim was Helen Fox".
Helen and I were not best friends in school, I can't tell you what her favourite colour was back then, or is now. I guess I should use the past tense but...

How do you know when you're dating an alcoholic? Better yet, how do you avoid dating one in the first place?
The answer is fairly simple. If you're in a relationship with someone who's always drinking, drunk, or drained from drinking the night before, odds are, they have a problem with alcohol.
As my friend rightly said when I raised this issue with him gender violence does not only affect women.

The Media and Domestic Violence, The Thin Line Between Comess/Gossip and News.
It is said that Randy Cohen once explained that although gossip and news can both be factual the difference between them boils down to ethics and intentions. Is the information going to help or do harm? If it is going to help then consider it news, if not consider it to be gossip.
It is beyond sad that it often takes a thing happening to us, for us to see how badly it can affect someone.
When women, men, or children fall victim to domestic violence, every body becomes curious; people start asking, who, when, how, and why. It saddens me when the media is over zealous in answering these questions. That a crime has been committed is one thing, that the victims direct and indirect should be further victimized is another. I can't help but to think that when we 'run' with these stories we often put the life of the victim in further jeopardy.

“Hi, I am Susan. I am
sharing my entire story so you can understand the subtleties of the rape
experience in marriage.
My husband and I first met on
Christmas Day many years ago. He was charming, attractive, kind and
sensitive at the time. We fell in love and in eighteen months we were
married in a beautiful wedding ceremony on the beach on Paradise Island.
All went well in the beginning of our relationship until the routine of
every-day living took over our lives.
We started having children
within two years and were busy working, going to church, and being involved
in community activities. Although I was busy like my husband, I realized
that I was demonstrating a greater need for closeness, affection, and
intense conversation. He worked hard and provided for the home
financially. I soon discovered thought that his “power house” body could
not really stand up against the daily rigors of heavy construction he was
involved in. He would come home hungry and tired at the end of the long
day. After eating he would fall asleep for the rest of the night and left
me hungry for attention. I did my best to make him comfortable, as an
understanding wife, but soon discovered that he showed no interest in
meeting my emotional needs. By this time he had lost his tender, sensitive,
caring spirit towards me.

How Does Domestic Violence Against Black Women Usually Start?
Some of the most horrific cases of domestic violence against women often start off most innocently: he doesn’t want her to go to the club; he tells her what to wear; he sits outside her home.
Yet, those innocent, “cute” little beginnings too often graduate — or better yet, mutate — into something much more sinister, says Toni Roberts, a paralegal and project coordinator at the State Families Office in Atlanta, who helps abused spouses get restraining orders and find refuge. The issue of domestic violence impacts blacks, but cuts across all ethnic lines, all demographics, Roberts testifies.

I am reading the book "Kissed the Girls and Made Them Cry- why women lose when they give in", by Lisa Bevere, it is taking me a while because job hunting is no easy task.
Anyhu here is a paragraph from the book I'd like to share with you. From time to time I will share a few more.
"I was told stories of an abuse- so subtle you may mistake it as harmless: parents who watched movies filled with sexual promiscuity, innuendos, and often, partial nudity with their children in the shelter of their homes or beside them in the dark theatre. Young girls shared how uncomfortable they'd been watching this with their parents, especially with their fathers. They'd feel shame and fidget, then look at their parents and notice they weren't flinching. After a few such movies or TV shows, they pushed the uncomfortable feelings away, buy were unable to see their parents in quite the same light. It was as though by watching their father view the naked breasts of another woman presented in a sexually suggestive manner, their own virgin breasts had been uncovered. They left the experience feeling vulnerable and violated and not even knowing why."
