Are you dating an alcoholic?

Testimonies: Dating an alcoholic

by Sarah Cook

How do you know when you're dating an alcoholic? Better yet, how do you avoid dating one in the first place?
The answer is fairly simple. If you're in a relationship with someone who's always drinking, drunk, or drained from drinking the night before, odds are, they have a problem with alcohol.
There's a difference between someone who just likes to party, and someone who parties too hard, too often, and too destructively. A good indicator that someone has crossed the line from recreational drinking to hazardous drinking is if they drink so much that they actually pass out asleep, only to stink of alcohol for the duration of their resting period. You'll also notice that this resting period is more of a coma, as an alcoholic sleeps like a bear in hibernation.

Another indicator that someone has a problem with alcohol is if they can't just have a drink or two. If they have to actually keep drinking until the point of inebriation, and beyond. If this is the case, the man or woman you're dating is basically never going to make you happy - trust me. They'll be too involved with the booze to give you the love you deserve.
Dating an alcoholic is just bad news. There's no other way to put it. Alcohol will always be an addict's number one love, that is unless they're strong enough to join AA and break their addiction altogether, and for good.
You might think you can handle your lover's alcoholic nature, but after a period of time, you'll realize that it will only bring you down, as there's no changing someone who simply doesn't want to change. And, even if your partner does want to change, it's going to take a big handle on maturity and determination for this to even happen in the first place.
So, don't hold your breath. The best thing you can do if you're dating an alcoholic is to try and help him or her conquer their addiction and come out as a stronger person. However, it's important to be sure that you only help as much as you can without hindering your own well-being. If this isn't possible, which in many cases, it isn't, it's best to get packing, and remember that you're better off without all the drunken drama.
