Please Stop Mr. DJ!!

I was at a function recently, a little community activity, and was having a chat with a friend about how good it was that the DJ had chosen to play 'back in time music'. You know those old songs that you listen to that just put you in a mood to chat, and laugh with your friends. The kind of music that would make you grab somebody and just twirl them around a dance floor, and they won't mind. Not the grind up on somebody music, or the shoot up somebody music...no no music that your pastor and his wife could groove to and not feel any shame or have any fear of damnation. :)

As the evening went on though, the music began to change, the dancehall vibes started creeping in and you could tell the change in temperament among patrons. The good old family get together was now being transformed into a village block-o. Things heightened when the DJ began to play the song "Bruk it Down" (you can find it on youtube) and wanted to create a competition for children (they seemed between 2 and 5 years) to 'bruk it down' on stage, because some irresponsible parent thought it funny to put their little daughter on stage to dance to the song. Thank the Good Lord in heaven that the organizer of the activity stepped in and asked him to put a stop to the nonsense. The DJ was annoyed by this and decided to tell the audience the details of the conversation. To appease himself he announced a 'bruk it down' competition for adult women, again the organizer stepped in...the night was saved once more.

I am not sure how some people earn the title of "DJ"; but I believe that a good DJ would understand that if he is hired to play at a party for a two year old, a church harvest, a disco, a faith based wedding reception, or a school fair that he has to compile different 'sets' (not sure if they call them sets or play lists) . Play the "Bruk it Down" in  the disco but try to play something 'cleaner' at the church harvest please.

The appropriateness of certain things eludes some of us.

I remember a few years ago how shocked I was to see a contestant on stage vying for a national beauty crown performing "Hot Wuk" as her talent.

Is it that we no longer care about what is correct, what is decent...what is appropriate? When did we begin accepting children as 'sex symbols'?
