They say if you stand for nothing you will fall for anything.

I remember reading once that when the "Say no to Drugs" campaign was launched Nancy Reagan posed the question- If we are asking children to say no to drugs what are we asking them to say yes to?

So yesterday at Sports Day the common chant was- "Finish the race every point counts".

We always talk about the human race, the rat race, and would refer to life itself as a race; yet many of seem not to want to gain any points.

Born in Guyana, Anjani was forced to leave school at the age of thirteen. Her mother had become ill and so being the eldest daughter the responsibility of taking care of the house hold landed on her. A year later her mother recovered and Anjani began lessons at the local seamstress.

Ever found yourself creeping around someone, around a relationship?

It is a lot like walking on egg shells or trying not to walk on them for that matter.

All your time is spent thinking of what you should or shouldn't say, and so you run out of time to actually say anything. You second guess all your moves and so you remain motionless. If you've been there then I know you understand if not well just bear with me.

...of blogging .well not yet but close.

So on February 22, 2012 DV I will be celebrating one whole year of terrorizing you with my blog posts.

To begin the second year, of my reign of terror, I have started a Facebook page ( click here to go to the page ) .  This page would act as an extension of the blog but I have teamed up with a brilliant young social worker so that we could bring to you more information on the things that matter to us. :-) .  It is my hope that her expertise would enable us to delve a little deeper into matters that we discuss from time to time.

As my friend rightly said when I raised this issue with him gender violence does not only affect women.

Excuse my prejudice in this post :)

I am beginning to wonder if men become abusive towards women because of what they witnessed as boys...the things the women in their lives put up with. I am not saying that this is the only reason men become abusive...but could it be one of.

Do Men Like Strong Women?

Some men claim there is nothing more attractive to them than a strong, independent, and intelligent woman. They claim that they would choose this type of woman over a weak-minded, easily led woman. Yet women who are described as strong and independent often assert the opposite — their backbone and self-determination causes issues with men and they are eventually passed over for women with less fortitude.

Men and the need to be needed...

I have always been intrigued by men who appear 'well off' (sound education, lucrative career, a bit of common sense etc) who end up with girls who I and others might consider not their equal. It isn't that these girls simply lack academic credentials so I think that they are inferior no it goes beyond that and rests mostly on deportment.  The way a lady carries herself speaks volumes, so what if people think you are 'fresh' far better than being called 'slack' and 'uncultured'.  Education can add to a woman's marketability in the mating game but let's face facts not every educated woman acts 'proper' or can be considered 'wife material' or 'mother material' which ever suits you.

Oh how we love our friends to have our backs, when instead they should bathe us in a bucket of cold water.

You might seem to be powerful and dreadful when you brag about the bad things you have done and I suppose that when your friends cheer you on you feel even more the 'bad John' or should I say the 'bad Jane'.

Below are some videos on domestic violence (against women) that I found on youtube.  I have posted them here because some give a bit of insight on why men abuse women, and others on why women put up with abuse.

The Media and Domestic Violence, The Thin Line Between Comess/Gossip and News.

It is said that Randy Cohen   once explained that although gossip and news can both be factual the difference between them boils down to ethics and intentions. Is the information going to help or do harm? If it is going to help then consider it news, if not consider it to be gossip.

It is beyond sad that it often takes a thing happening to us, for us to see how badly it can affect someone.

When women, men, or children fall victim to domestic violence, every body becomes curious; people start asking, who, when, how, and why. It saddens me when the media is over zealous in answering these questions. That a crime has been committed is one thing, that the victims direct and indirect should be further victimized is another.  I can't help but to think that when we 'run' with these stories we often put the life of the victim in further jeopardy.

While doing some reading on Bob Marley today (his birthday) I came upon the biography of his daughter Cedella.

All I can say is - What a woman!

Born on August 23, 1967, the world met Cedella as a singing and dancing teenager with The Melody Makers, the Marley sibling group featuring her younger brothers Ziggy on lead vocals and guitar and Stephen on percussion and vocals. For two decades The Melody Makers toured the world establishing a new generation of Marley musical mystique, as they sold millions of albums and reaped an assortment of prestigious honors including three Grammy Awards.
