Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" is one of the greatest songs ever made!!
It is a song that challenges us to do many things; educating ourselves and standing up for injustice are just two.
We are often placed in situations where we are to be an element of change, sadly many of us shy away from these opportunities because we are uneducated. I don't mean uneducated in the sense that we never went to school but in the sense that we are often unaware of the rights of others and ourselves.
As humans we are ALL entitled to some basic rights, treat people with fairness at all times. Respect the fact that they just like you are placed on this earth to enjoy all that there is. Your religion, skin colour, social class...does not make you a more entitled person.
Moreover, above and beyond everything else, be willing and bold enough to stand up for the things you know are right and just, be courageous enough to fight a good fight, and be relentless enough to see it to its end.
Emancipation did not come about because people simply thought it was a good idea. It came about because there were people who thought it was worthy to fight for, that it was worth dying for.
As a black Caribbean woman, raised by a strong black Caribbean woman I pray always to have the strength to stand up for the things I believe in, and to face injustices head on.
Happy Emancipation Day!! The struggle continues.
