My Mother

Jacintha C. James is my biological mother but she has also mothered other Vincentians in her former position as a school teacher and continues to do so through involvement in various organizations. She grew up in a poor family but with determination and a thirst for knowledge has been able to lift herself out of poverty and now uses her life as an example to empower other women to do the same. She is a firm believer in the strength of women and is living proof that women are not only care-givers but that they also possess the ability redefine their worlds. I wish to highlight her work using three of the UN’s goals

Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger

As Manager of Training and Education at the Centre for Enterprise Development Inc, an organization that has as part of its objectives the reduction of poverty, she has designed programmes geared towards the promotion of community economic development as a way of ensuring rural residents find employment within their communities. Recognising the fallout from the banana industry and its economic implications for rural residents, she has put together the concept paper for a project entitled 'Reducing Rural Poverty through Entrepreneurship Development which received funding from the Organization of American States (OAS). The project apart from providing training also provided small grants to several individuals in 5 rural communities to start new businesses or expand existing ones.

Goal 3: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women

My mom has developed many training and public education programmes while working at the CED that promote the empowerment of women and gender equality.

Her work in the community involves facilitating training on entrepreneurship development, change management, conflict resolution, interview skills, customer service and other soft skills and domestic violence. She has made local radio and television appearances and produced articles in newspapers highlighting the virtue of women’s involvement in entrepreneurship. My mom has also scripted two comic books (aimed at encouraging young persons especially women, to see entrepreneurship as an alternative source of employment) for her workplace in which young women are the main characters. The comic books emphasize the need for women to become more assertive and engaging in entrepreneurship not just as final consumers but as the ones who can lead the process.

She is an active member of her church’s woman’s group and gives periodic assistance to a community group in our village.

My mom has also written a text entitled “Understanding Domestic Violence: A Manual for Community Educators”. This manual has over the years served as a tool for many persons who conducted seminars and workshops on Domestic Violence.

Goal 7: Ensure Environmental Sustainability

On the job she promotes respect for the environment and the need to engage in practices that do not cause harm to the environment. She encourages the use of DVDs and CDs instead of hard copies of manuals to reduce paper usage and the use of emails to disseminate information, wherever possible.
