Tonight I looked at the documentary "Motherland" hosted by the group Afrikan Heritage (in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines), and although some of what was depicted was not new information the documentary kept my attention and now has me doing further research...that's when you know something good.
Like I said some tid bits I have heard before but I did learn quite a lot.
The thought that has me now is the issue if citizenship and identity. Have you ever met for instance a Chinese-Trinidadian, a White-South African, a Chinese-Nigerian, an Indian-Londoner...and the only thought that came to your mind was oh he or she is Chinese, Indian ... (Yes I have deliberately left out African or Black), we tend always to label people who stand out by what comes before the hyphen. Basically what comes before the hyphen could be described as the person's identity (this is formed by a culture, a history...that they share with many others), what comes after the hyphen is their citizenship.
Is it then that we can not chose our identity?
Now the reason why I left out African-... or Black-... is because the documentary raised another interesting idea- When we people say they are Black-Americans or Black anything, where is this country/ region "Black" of which they speak located?
I can go on all night but I won't if you have not seen the documentary "Mother Land' and you are interested in History, Anthropology, Economics, Cinematography, man look if you like to learn about yourself and the way the world works check it out.
The following is a Facebook post from Afrikan Heritage:
